A Refreshing Mango Lassi is absolutely necessary to complete any Indian meal. Refreshing mango and cooling yogurt pair perfectly with spicy Indian dishes like my Handmade Paneer Tikka Masala, or Chicken Tikka Masala. (Don't forget the Garlic Butter Naan!) Seriously, go check them out!

Refreshing Mango Lassi

A mango lassi is a smoothie-like drink made with mango and yogurt that is popular in Indian cuisine. It is very simple and made with minimal ingredients. The best part is that you can use any form of mango you want - fresh, frozen, or even canned pulp if you like. Blend it with plain whole milk yogurt, some sugar (or honey!), a bit of salt, then top with a small pinch of ground cardamom to finish it off.

Mango Lassi Ingredients

There are five simple ingredients to this mango lassi recipe. Frozen mango, whole milk plain yogurt, sugar, salt, and a small pinch of ground cardamom (optional). I opted for frozen mango this time around to save some time, and I wasn't able to find canned mango pulp at my local grocery stores.

If you opt to use fresh mango, be sure to pick ripe mangos. (Check out this article from mango.org to learn how to pick the perfect mango!) There is a bit of work with peeling and dicing the mango yourself, but you do get the freshest flavor this way. Frozen and canned mango are still great options to use and produce fantastic results. Be aware that some canned mango products already come with sugar added. If you use this type, just adjust the sugar level accordingly.

Whole-milk plain yogurt is preferred for this recipe. Low-fat, fat-free, or Greek yogurt can be used, but you will not have as rich of a flavor.

Pro tip: When using frozen mango, I like to add a few chunks directly to the drink before serving. They act like ice cubes and keep your lassi cool on a hot day.
