Picture this: it's a warm summer night, you're hanging out on the porch, the grill is fired up, and you have an ice-cold margarita in your hand. There's not a whole lot more that can live up to that, right? This Classic Margarita recipe is a small piece of that puzzle, albeit it is an important one! Just a few simple ingredients come together to make a drink that really is more than the sum of its parts.

Classic Margarita

Clearly, you don't have to wait until summer to enjoy a good margarita. These have even been known to help cure the wintertime blues!

Margarita Ingredients

Silver tequila, good-quality triple sec, fresh squeezed lime juice, a touch of agave nectar, and sea salt are everything that you need to put this drink together.

Classic Margarita Ingredients

It is just as easy to make an outstanding margarita as it is to make a mediocre one. So why are we still settling for anything but the best?! It's madness, I tell you! It really all comes down to the quality of the ingredients you use.

Classic Margarita

Good-quality triple sec (like Cointreau or Grand Marnier) and fresh squeezed lime juice are the most important parts of this recipe. The quality of the tequila actually doesn't matter quite as much as you would initially think. Any decent silver tequila that is 100% pure agave will work perfectly fine. Steer clear of anything that doesn't say 100% agave and bottom shelf selections. Camarena is a great option because it is 100% agave, it's fairly priced, and it tastes great.

The other piece of this recipe is agave nectar which adds just a touch of sweetness. I have made this recipe both with and without the agave nectar and I prefer it with. I have found that the hint of sweetness really rounds out the drink and provides fantastic balance. Find agave nectar here.

These are the perfect addition to taco night, with Hearty Chicken Enchiladas and Restaurant Style Cheese Dip, or any Mexican or Tex-Mex cuisine! They're also really good just by themselves.

This classic margarita recipe is the last one you will ever need! A touch of sweetness from agave syrup balances this out perfectly.

  • Cocktail Shaker
  • Tumbler or Margarita Glass

Ingredients

  • 2 oz Silver Tequila 100% Agave
  • 1 oz Fresh Lime Juice Juice from 1 whole lime

  • ½ oz Agave Nectar Optional (Can substitute simple syrup as well)
  • Fine Sea Salt for Rim
  • Lime Wedge for Garnish

Instructions

Prepare Glasses

  • Pour fine sea salt on a plate or in a shallow bowl. Rub a lime wedge around the rim of a tumbler or margarita glass, and dip into the salt. Fill ¾ of the glass with ice if serving on the rocks.

Mix Cocktail

  • Fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Add the tequila, lime juice, triple sec, and agave nectar if using. Cover and shake for 30-seconds to 1-minute until cocktail is thoroughly chilled. Strain and pour into prepared glass. Garnish with a lime wedge.

Notes

Triple the ingredients and swap the glass for two pint glasses filled with ice and you've got enough for two doubles, which are perfect for sharing!
